PARIS STUDIO IN A BOX

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Fresh from my temporary studio in Paris…..  It has been an interesting challenge creating  from my make shift studio in Paris .Ive had to work differently from my usual  larger pieces. Pieces have become more intricate and detailed.I even created some more hand made books and collages using whatever I could find .I am enjoying re-cycling everything I can get my hands on….I just sent back to Australia 5, 7kg. boxes of junk ,collected from the streets and stuff that lovely people have  given to me to re-use in  my art.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS YOU ARE AN ARTIST?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

What are the signs that you’re an artist? (I’m not telling which ones I identify with, except to say I’ve never dunked a brush in my coffee — well I dont drink coffee

The highlights in your hair are from your palette and not Clairol.

The only piece of new furniture you have in your home is a $2000 easel.

You butter your toast with your fingers, just to feel its texture.

You think about taking a picture to a show.

You go to a show where the pictures dont move

You are over 50 and still have no health insurance.

Your family takes out a life insurance plan on you for less than $5000.

You know what shade of green the lichen on the trees is.

You can’t find a nice outfit for your date because everything has paint smears on.

Your date ends up with paint smears on her/him.

You’re late for the date because you suddenly knew exactly what that detail of your latest painting needed and just had to fix it while it was fresh in your mind.

You chose to buy that new Russian Sable No. 6 Round instead of a Big Mac, a Large Fry, a Milkshake, Desert, and five litres of petrol.

Your favorite home repair store refuses to work with you to repaint your house, because you rename all of their paint swatches and you get upset that they don’t carry the exact nuance of raw umber you had in mind.

You purchase a ton of books, and most are blank inside.

When viewing a sunset, you think in terms of cadmium yellow (light hue), salmon and gold, a tinted teal mixed with gold for the water….

” There are Prussian blue fingerprints on your phone.

You stay awake late at night wondering how to render on canvas the dimly lit shapes and the shadows in your room.

When you go out, you are always stopping and gazing at the world around you.

You travel far to sketch a place of scenic beauty.

You clean your brushes in your coffee.

You carry pencils instead of pens.

You have watercolor swatches on cardboard in your pocket.

You explain your deplorably bad housekeeping by saying, “it’s a work-in-progress..

.” You do judge a book by its cover.

You bought paint instead of food!

You paint more than you talk.

COLLECTING

Collecting can become so addictive, especially for an artist. My found objects and things are the inspiration and starting point for most of my artwork and ideas. When I see something; it can trigger of an instant idea and give me a vision to work with.I think this is why I love museums too as display and arranging objects are an important part of my work.

I have been collecting since I was born. I used to hide stuff under my bed in boxes as a child .As an adult I’m still putting stuff into boxes and plastic bags and other strange things. I view my collections as arrangements. They are all art installations scattered around my place as well as material for use in my arts projects

Walking through the streets to the local shop I always come home with something foot trodden. A piece of paper, packaging, a bright piece of plastic, glass all will be used in my art eventually. When I travel overseas (much to the sometimes embarrassment to friends and family) I pick up off the ground, bottle tops, lolly papers, wires bright bits of plastic, even if an item disturbs me I’ll bring it home.On a tour once in Europe the whole busload of passengers collected bottle tops for me.

My stuff may brood for years in a dark space or cupboard till I come across it again sending me off on another project. On my last trip to Paris I came home with 15 kilo of junk. I collected baguette bags, bits of string, stones, free ad cards, labels from food items, torn posters, a book and papers from a bin.

All sorts of ephemera is precious to me. I collect found photographs, as they tell a story about people and places I’ll never know about.I make up my own stories. I collect found images, negatives, scientific stuff, equations, wire, tin, bones, animal skeletons, fur, hair, watches, old mobile covers, eye glasses, shrivelled things, found numbers and fonts from keyboards, magazines and advertising, boxes, packaging, all sorts paper, vintage clothes, fabrics, wall papers, shells, driftwood, snowglobes, toys, childrens books and so much more.

I go to op shops, cities, airports underground spaces ,beaches, garage sales, friends houses and sometimes, find stuff on EBay though, part of the fun and attraction for me is, the actual finding of a material that is discarded and thrown away. I like to recycle it into something else or, just show its beauty, as it is.

Collections of stuff are also extremally important for future generations, for History. 100’s years from now someone may come across my piece of fabric, wallpaper ,lolly paper, box ,bone etc that will give them information on of how we lived in our time, in our place.

Collections are also portraits of those who love to glean….. Check out Andy Warhol’s boxes and boxes of stuff he collected over his life time http://www.warhol.org/collections/archives.html What do you like to collect?
