I use my work as a way to process whatever I’m seeing or thinking at the time. This can be purely self indulgent and personal, as well as sometimes, tapping into a broader or shared concern.
I like to let people bring their own thoughts to a piece. My work is the entry point, then people might be inclined to look harder and tease out other thoughts and connections to the work.
New paintings available in my gallery. “Rustmatter” series. I want to capture the “beauty & hope” in decline, before its gone and continues my investigation into the disintegration and decay of the environment, of life and the human psyche.
Experiments with layers of rust, paint, iron shavings and salt. Finally, surfaces emerged, worn , weathered and sometimes ancient. I then sealed the paintings to keep stable and lock in the layers.

Château of Versailles and the beginnings of something.
Walking through the hundreds of rooms at Château of Versailles, I couldn’t help but notice, the old, stuffy smell and the sound of squeaky, footsteps upon the ancient floors. So, I made a sound video and took close up shots of the wallpapers and other surfaces.
I mainly had a fascination with the “over the top” décor, decorative surfaces and patterns.
Below the surfaces of this show of power and extravagance, was a history of passion, debauchery, sex, treachery, brutality, corruption, torture and death. I imagined the exotic and beautiful people, the power of the Kings, the abuse of women, Marie Antoinette and the peasants who starved in villages.
I also was taken back to my childhood, when, I enjoyed being in my own little world creating, away from the real world. My mum used to make gorgeous clothes with beautiful fabrics and trimmings and I was given the leftover’s. I taught myself to make collage’s, wall hangings, to decorate my room from a very young age.
When I was older, I decorated my bedroom with scarves, scraps of fabric and tacked up old bedspreads, made from cotton and woven fringes. The bedspreads became a wallpaper backdrop for my bed that I made into a couch.
I made heaps of cushions and would sit for hours reading, Go Set and TV Week, magazines. The pop star posters were stuck onto the other 3 walls and ceiling.
Since returning from France, I haven’t forgotten the over the top extravagance of Château of Versailles and have been playing around with a few ideas and may look into having an arts residency, nearby in the future.
Its been a awhile since I’ve been in Paris but feels like I haven’t been away at all, this time. I’ve spent the week soaking up the atmosphere, the smells, the heat, the food.
Its a really busy, vibrant, city and far from the peace and quite of the Yarra Valley, but, being out of my comfort zone allows me to explore and experiment other ways of working and documenting experiences.
Today I played around with a few ideas. I have been particularly drawn to the architecture especially, the small intricate, decorative patterns within.
I’m looking forward to a visit to Versailles palace to see all the decorative bits. Especially the antique furniture wallpaper and textile designs.

My favourite artist of the month is Anselm Kiefer. A German artist who creates paintings and monumental installations with crusted surfaces, incorporating, lead, concrete, ash, acid, earth, glass and gold, broken glass, oil, emulsion, shellac, acrylic and raw materials from nature.
I particularly like Kiefer’s ambitious project of transforming an old derilict silk factory in La Ribaute France into a monumental studio art complex where he created his monumental works. He dug out underground chambers, tunnels, to create living and working spaces set amongst strange, reinforced, concrete towers and bunkers, woods and caves. There was even a crypt, an amphitheatre and underground pool.

Over the past 3 months I have been living and making art with my daughter in Paris. I came here to finish off an arts project I started 2 years ago.
Meet the Tenant project began during the Summer of 2007, when I ventured down into the underground area of an apartment block in Asnieres sur seine. I sensed the presence of past lives lurking within the walls and this became the starting point for my project.
I call this space “The Dungeon” Within days I had massed hundreds of images, video, photos and drawings. I took them back to my studio in Australia and have been working on the project ever since. I edited the videos into an 18 minute piece and printed out some of the photos. Developed a story-line which keeps changing, and created a proposal to be performed . (See 1st draft below)
Today back in Paris 2010, I’m still no closer to resolving this project its forever ongoing and not sure where it will end up and its driving me mad.

You will own the experience, everything, including my clothes, shoes, food containers ,implements etc…I will deliver them to you.
